Born in Santa Cruz, Ed Penniman was mentored from a young age by his grandmother, a renowned regional artist of the 1930s. Skilled in various media, he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Chouinard Art School of California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles. He was hired by Ogilvy & Mather Advertising as an Art Director before graduating. Previously, also an award-winning graphic designer, his work in corporate identity, packaging, and advertising has been widely published internationally and featured in Communication Arts Magazine. Ed contracted Guillain-Barré Syndrome in 1984 and spent years recovering from Quadriplegia. He started painting with a brush in his mouth. He authored the book 'You Are Up to You, documenting the many lessons, blessings, and tests of the experience. Ed has lectured at the University of California at Santa Cruz on Corporate Identity and Branding. Ed, a dedicated ‘Plein Air’ painter and studio painter, has traveled extensively, painting across the Bahamas, West Indies, Europe, and the Americas. He curated the Santa Cruz Art League’s Annual Statewide Landscape Exhibition from 2007 to 2024, enhancing its contemporary relevance. Ed's contributions to the art community continue to draw national attention and acclaim. He is a member and financial sustainer of many arts organizations.
Penniman is an Artist Member of the California Art Club, the American Impressionist Society, and the Oil Painters of America. Lawrence worked as a draftsman and commercial artist prior to his career as a teacher. He is now a writer and artist. Cherryl is a traditional painter. She describes her work as Romantic or Realism. Her studio is outside of Soledad, California, in the Mission District of Monterey County where she paints local landscapes of farms, vineyards, and cattle. One was selected by the City of Salinas to send to their Sister City in Japan. |
January...2024 Ardith Banuelos
Ardith has loved creating art and crafts all her long life. When her children were young, she created dress patterns and sewed for them as well as herself. Later, she took many classes to do more artistic things including numerous craft and painting techniques. She truly enjoys being a member of SVAA and attends as many sessions as possible. |
November and December...2023 Michael Elliott
Michael studied environmental science, psychology, art (ceramics and some printmaking), then computer systems. Early on, he and his wife did craft fairs. Later, he explored ceramics and glass blowing. Now retired, he has become a watercolor enthusiast and is developing those skills. |

While attending high school, she worked as a colorist in a photography studio, and later worked in a floral shop as a designer. A lithograph of her drawing of the John Steinbeck House was purchased by the City of Salinas and sent to Japan to hang in the City Hall of its sister city Kushikino, Kagoshima. |

Gail's father and mother painted with oils as a hobby and gave her painting supplies and an art book when she was 7 years old. Her father patiently let Gail paint when he painted. She continues to have an interest in painting. She now paints in oil, watercolor, acrylics, pen and pastels. |

Joan mostly learned by reading, sketching and collecting books on different artist books. "As far as I can remember, my 1st joy was pencil and paper and then colors." I have been into many artistic endeavors such as ceramics, china painting and kiln firing but water colors became what I loved most. |

Vivian grew up in Hong Kong. She was educated in the UK and the US. She did Chinese ink painting after high school and studied under three masters. She was introduced to western painting during college years, with acrylic as the primary media. Watercolor came along later in her life. |

Family and a career spent as the owner of her own hair salon were early priorities. After attending an art class, her first oil painting was accepted as one of 42 entrees out of 500 submitted. She is now an internationally known artist and her child hood dreams have been realized. |
